Luka Modric believes Barcelona will move on from Lionel Messi similarly to what Real Madrid did with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Losing Ronaldo proved to be a severe blow for Real Madrid in 2018/19. They struggled to cope at all without their goal demon, falling to a dismal third-place finish in LaLiga and losing their Champions League crown.
This run of misfortunes led to Zinedine Zidane’s return in March 2019. While pulling the broken pieces back together was no mean feat, he led the club to LaLiga glory last season.
Although Ronaldo’s magic touch was still sorely missed in the Champions League, as Real Madrid fell to an untimely last-16 exit at the hands of Manchester City in August.
Now Barcelona find themselves in a similar conundrum as star man Messi attempts to leave them this summer. However, Modric is certain there is light at the end of the tunnel for the Catalan club.
“It would be a huge loss. Like when Cristiano left. But you can’t think about the past. It’s football and that’s it,” Modric told AFP on Barca losing Messi as quoted on Goal.
“If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league. But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.
“When Ronaldo left, the same thing happened, the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and La Liga without Messi.”
