Luka Modric has opened up on the impact of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Real Madrid to Juventus describing him as a player any team would miss.
Ronaldo scored a staggering 450 goals in just 438 appearances for Madrid before sealing a club-record move to the Bianconeri last summer.
Los Blancos have struggled domestically in their first season without the No 7, according to Modric ahead of his side’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Ajax on Tuesday.
“Finding a replacement for Cristiano is almost impossible. What he’s done for this club… of course we miss Cristian. He told Football Italia.
“What the club tried to do was let other players fulfil their roles in the attack. And that’s not easy.
“Cristiano scored 50 goals and you can’t find someone who scores that much. Someone didn’t have to come forward with 50 goals but rather two or three players who scored 10, 15 or 20 goals. We don’t have that this season.
Modric who clinched the Ballon d’Or feels Madrid’s problem is the end product despite Benzema’s prolific form.
“That’s why I think [goalscoring] is our biggest problem this season. For example against Barcelona in the cup we made many chances, but a team with such quality can punish you.
Modric: "Cristiano scored 50 goals, and you can't find someone else who can do that. Some had to take a step forward, and though not score 50, but at least score 15-20, or even ten goals. This is what we are missing. That's why I think scoring is our biggest problem this season." pic.twitter.com/sWI4XwtNi1

“Cristiano isn’t here but we can’t complain about that for the next 10 years. The club have put their faith in other players like Gareth [Bale], [Marco] Asensio, Karim [Benzema], plus we’ve brought in Mariano and Vinicius, who’s doing very well for his age.
“However, things sometimes don’t go like we want them to. All we can do is work and go out together.
“Madrid will always be on the up. Sometimes we may not be, but we always come back.”
