Mustafi rues costly second goal in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi admits that they shouldn’t have conceded the second goal in their 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday night

The German’s 26th-minute header opened the scoring at Old Trafford before birthday boy Anthony Martial put United level.

A Marcos Rojo own goal restored Arsenal’s lead after the break before Jesse Lingard equalised for United by bouncing on Sead Kolasinac’s attempted backpass.

While Arsenal held on to extend their unbeaten run to 20 games, Mustafi was left to rue what might have been after they dropped valuable points in the race for a top-four spot in the Premier League.

“We tried everything to get the three points and take the three points home,” Mustafi said on Arsenal.com.

“We went in front, conceded and then went in front again. Then we conceded and that’s where we have to be a little bit more clever. We should’ve been aware of the danger and not conceded the second one.

“At the end of the day, we’ve had two big games against Tottenham at the weekend and then Manchester United away, and we’ve got four points from them. I think we can move on from that.”

Arsenal, who are now fifth in the league standings, will next host Huddersfield Town on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.
