Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri started the new year in the same fashion they finished, reclaiming top spot with an emphatic away win at the San Paolo.
Contrary to Juventus’ fans expectations, Napoli could not help them in their Serie A title race. The Partenopei did not stand in Inter’s way as they poor run of form continued. Juventus’ pole position lasted for only a couple of hours as Inter Milan secured an important away win.
Romelu Lukaku was the destroyer in chief with a brace. The Belgian capitalized on a defensive error to open the scoring, slotting into the bottom corner after 14 minutes. His second came from 20-yards out as he profited from a Marcelo Brozovic pass.
It was a quiet half for the Napoli, but they managed to pull one goal back through Arkadiusz Milik. It would be their only effort that troubled the scorers with Inter taking the game.
Inter would go into the break with optimism. While Rino Gattuso pondered how he can unlock the midfield and defense of his opposing numbers. The result was a dour second half.
The cagey affair continued with Conte reigning supreme with his tactical maneuvers. Lautaro Martinez doubled the Nerazzuri’s lead with his ninth league goal of the campaign.
While Cristiano Ronaldo took plaudits with a hat-trick against Cagliari, Inter remain untouchable. At the summit of Serie A points table, they have a better goal difference record and are blowing team away.
