Dries Mertens is a key figure for Napoli in recent seasons and Gli Azzurri don’t want to lose one of their most important figures.
Mertens’ contract with Napoli runs out this summer.
Thus, the club wants to renew one of their best players. Mertens became the club’s second all-time top scorer a couple of weeks ago.
However, even though the extension was almost confirmed, it looks like there’s more negotiating to be done.
According to Il Mattino, finances are the issue. Mertens wants €4 million per season, while the club is only ready to offer €3 million.
Furthermore, the player wants a sign-on bonus, too, on top of an improved financial offer.
It’s hard to say if Mertens’ requests are far-fetched. He’s a free agent in the summer, thus he could get a big payday if he decides to go on the market.
The forward could even leave this winter, but a €10 million release clause only applies to overseas teams.
Negotiations go on, but hopefully, the club legend remains in Naples.
