The Serbian international has plenty of suitors for his signature and should leave Old Trafford at the earliest with the European championships coming up.
Jose Mourinho brough Nemanja Matic to Manchester. It was the second time the Special One was securing his services after letting him go when he was a youth star. A third reunion at Tottenham has been mooted but it is far from certain.
The Serbian midfielder has made a paltry 12 outings for the Red Devils this season, with most of his appearances coming from the bench. Matic’s contract ends at the end of the season and he has plenty of suitors.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the 31-year-old to stay at Old Trafford. The Norwegian believes Matic will have a role to play as the season picks up pace and United are fighting on all fronts.
‘Nemanja will stay,” Solskjaer declared as per Metro.
“He’s been working hard to get back in and now he’s here and he’s playing well.
“There’s always a chance for [a new contract], of course, there is. It’s what you do on the pitch that is the decisive factor there,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued.
“If someone drops out you have to be ready and take your opportunity and I think he’s done okay.”
Nemanja Matic has been one of United’s best players since December and the expiry date of his contract is nearing. It has been rumored that a contract extension will be tabled soon enough.
Leaving now is the best option
However, Matic should not continue at Manchester for long. It makes no sense for him to stay and be a bit part player. Especially when there are suitors lining up to take him. Tottenham want him. While Diego Simeone is a vocal admirer of his talents.
With the European championships right around the corner, the former Chelsea and Benfica star needs regular first team action. Especially in the league, where Matic has only have 6 appearances to date.
A move away is the best solution to him personally. United will not allow him to leave on a free but will be agreeable to a just offer.
And it is not a bad scenario for Manchester United as well. Ed Woodward will gladly get rid of a high earner at the club and use the funds and freed up wages to secure the signature of Bruno Fernandes.
With the arrival of another midfielder, Matic will have fewer chances to appear. And it is his best interest to leave at the earliest.
