Newcastle United are in talks with West Bromwich Albion over signing Salomon Rondon in a £16.5million deal, according to Sky Sports.
The Baggies forward has a £16.5m release clause, and Rafa Benitez sees him as a direct replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The Magpies have stepped up their interest following the Serb’s transfer to Fulham, which is close to completion.
The move for Rondon could involve Dwight Gayle going in the other direction – either in a straight loan swap OR a player-plus-cash deal.
Gayle was an unused sub in last night’s goalless draw with Porto. The former Palace striker scored 23 goals for Newcastle during their time in the Championship, but couldn’t replicate that form as he only managed to score on 6 occasions last season.
The Venezuelan striker currently 28-years-old has netted 24 goals in 108 appearances for West Brom since his switch from Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Rondon is a proven striker at Premier League level, and though he struggled for goals last campaign, Rafa Benitez will be hoping the West Brom man could find the back of the net for Newcastle next season.
