NR Sports have denied reports in Spain alleging that Neymar is under investigation for tax evasion.
On Monday, Spanish newspaper El Mundo announced that Neymar was under investigation by the tax authorities over an alleged bonus payment he accepted as part of signing a contract extension at Barcelona in October 2016.
The report also added that the Brazilian forward’s world-record €222m transfer to Paris Saint-Germain during the summer of 2017 was also under investigation.
But now Neymar’s agency have responded to El Mundo’s claims by clarifying that the Spanish tax authorities had only requested documents and updates in regards to an already open case, which will hold a hearing on March 21.
“NR Sports, the company responsible for the exclusive management of Neymar Jr’s career and image rights, herby states that, on the contrary to the material published by the Spanish newspaper ‘El Mundo’ and reproduced in various means of communications, no investigative procedure was opened by the Spanish Treasury against Neymar Jr,” read a statement on NR Sports.
“What happened, in fact, was a request from the Spanish Revenue Service to the local Labor Court to be informed of the outcome of the facts of a scheduled hearing on March 21st. That is, the Revenue Service wants to be kept in the loop of the outcome of the process.
“Another issue raised by the press concerns the amounts regarding Neymar Jr’s transfer from FC Barcelona [ESP] to PSG [FRA].
“The amounts are included in the income tax return submitted to the Spanish authority in the year 2018 for the base year 2017. We hope to have clarified the facts.”
Currently, Neymar remains on the sidelines due to another metatarsal injury that he sustained during PSG’s 2-0 Coupe de France win over RC Strasbourg on January 23.
The Ligue 1 champions will be in action tonight away to Dijon FCO with kick-off set for 7:00 PM (CET).
