Arsenal have confirmed their capture of Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal.
After struggling for regular opportunities under Real manager Zinedine Zidane, Ceballos was on the lookout for a new club this summer who could guarantee him regular football for the new season.
The six-time Spain international is keen to get as many minutes on the pitch as possible to persuade La Roja boss Robert Moreno to give him a spot in next summer’s European Championship.
And now Ceballos has decided to link-up with his fellow Spaniard Unai Emery at Arsenal. He will wear the number eight jersey left by Aaron Ramsey, who now plays for Juventus, on a season-long loan agreement.
Despite Zidane not being a big fan of the former Real Betis star, however, the deal doesn’t involve an option or obligation for Arsenal to buy him next summer.
Speaking for the first time as an Arsenal player, Ceballos revealed how the prospect of working under Emery convinced him to turn down the likes of north London rivals Tottenham.
“I knew I had the confidence of the coach, which was very important for me from the start,” he told Arsenal.com.
“I was aware of the responsibility that wearing this shirt entails and it was a tremendously proud moment when I decided to join Arsenal.”
Ceballos added: “The coach was the turning point in terms of me joining this massive club. He’s a Spanish coach and he knows me from my time at other clubs.
“I’m really happy to be able to help Arsenal achieve our objectives.”
Ceballos becomes Arsenal’s second signing of the summer transfer window following the €6.70m arrival of Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano.
The Gunners are, though, expected to welcome more recruits as Emery previously teased that he expects “three or four players” to arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
One of those could be Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba for a reported £27m. However, the 18-year-old will likely return to his current club on loan for next season.
Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha and Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney are also allegedly on Arsenal’s radar.
