Official: Barcelona sign Frenkie de Jong from Ajax

After a long period of negotiations, FC Barcelona was finally able to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong for an impressive €75 + €11 million.

The deal between FC Barcelona and Ajax for Frenkie de Jong has finally been announced, the Catalan club needed to send president Josep Maria Bartomeu as the main envoy to close the deal for the Dutch player.

The negotiations were taken to the most extreme conditions as several major clubs got in the way by trying to lure the player to their ranks, clubs like PSG, Manchester City, and Juventus attempted to sign De Jong as well. However, the Ajax midfielder’s wish was always to play for Barcelona and all he needed was a little convincing.

The details of the negotiation were announced by the club this afternoon, they paid Ajax €75 million plus another €11 million in variables and €4 more if certain objectives are obtained during the time that the player remains at Barcelona.

De Jong has already taken the protocolary photographs signing his new contract for the Spanish giants, he is set to travel back to Barcelona along with the club’s president but won’t start his career at the club until the 1st of July later this year.

Frenkie de Jong adds to a long list of illustrious Dutch players who have represented the FC Barcelona colors, from Johan Cruyff, to Frank de Boer, to Patrick Kluivert, all the way to today’s goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

“FC Barcelona and Ajax have reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who will be joining the Catalan club from 1 July 2019,” wrote Barcelona on their official website.

“The cost of the transfer operation is 75 million euros, plus a further 11 million in variables. The player will be signing a contract for the next five seasons, through to 2023/24.”

“Born on 5 May 1997 in Arkel (Netherlands), Frenkie de Jong is one of the Europe’s most promising midfield talents. At just 21 years of age, he is joining FC Barcelona after proving himself as a polyvalent player with an excellent reading of the game and ability to provide the killer pass.”

“The Dutchman started out in the Willem II academy, but after just one year in Tiburg he caught the eye of Ajax, who signed him to the club in 2015. However, he was loaned back from Amsterdam to his former team to ensure he got enough playing time to fully develop as a player.”

“De Jong then returned to Ajax to lead its reserve team, Jong Ajax, in the Jupiler League. A year on from then, he started getting his first call-ups for first-team duty, and appeared for the final minutes of the Europa League final against Manchester United in 2017.”

Kieran Trippier played well in his first La Liga game for Atletico Madrid, adding an assist to go with the performance. Former Burnley and Tottenham...

“From there, he went on to become a regular starter, and eventually an essential part of the Ajax machine. Right-footed and strong in the one-on-one, Frenkie de Jong can play either as a defensive or attacking midfielder.”

“His wonderful vision and natural ability to find the right pass mean he is the perfect choice as a central playmaker,” they added.

Now that this deal has finally been closed for the midfielder, FC Barcelona will also attempt to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax as well.

However, the negotiations for this Dutch centre-back will be even more complicated than the ones that took place for De Jong.

The Catalan club should take this news as a massive victory over the rest of the clubs that attempted to sign him, but this may be a bold move from the Catalan club because they will now have to deal with PSG’s anger after failing to sign the one player they wanted the most.

After this end of the chapter about Frenkie de Jong, we can expect the French giants to come after several Barcelona players in the next couple of transfer windows.

And the Catalan club can forget about Neymar’s return, of course. They can also forget about the possibility of signing Kylian Mbappe in the future, De Jong’s transfer was a declaration of war for PSG.
