Former AS Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco has returned to football upon signing a three-year contract with Sampdoria.
Di Francesco had been out of work since Roma dismissed him in March following a dismal campaign that left them on the brink of failing to finish in the Serie A top-four.
The Giallorossi turned to Claudio Ranieri to turn things around at the Italian capital. However, even the fan favourite couldn’t spare them from missing out on Champions League football for the first time in six years.
More recently, Di Francesco had been a reported candidate to replace Gennaro Gattuso at AC Milan. Rumours in the Italian media claimed that he was part of a three-man shortlist along with Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini and Marco Giampaolo of Sampdoria.
But the 49-year-old was overlooked for the San Siro post in favour of Giampaolo, with Milan confirming his appointment on Wednesday on an initial two-year contract.
However, Di Francesco has quickly bounced back from the Milan disappointment by taking over Giampaolo’s old job at Sampdoria.
“Di Francesco is the best choice for our goal to keep improving Samp,” read a statement from club president Massimo Ferrero.
“He comes with knowledge, experience, good football, desire and mentality. Welcome, Eusebio.”
Sampdoria have signed up Di Francesco on a three-year deal and will now be eagerly awaiting the start of the new season.
The Blucerchiati finished the previous Serie A campaign in a respectable ninth-place in the standings. However, they will have to dig deep next term should they hope to qualify for Europe after finishing 13 points behind sixth-place Roma in the final Europa League spot.
On the bright side for Di Francesco, Sampdoria proved they can mix with the best in the business after defeating champions Juventus 2-0 on the final day of last season.
Furthermore, they have the Serie A’s top-scorer in the never-ageing Fabio Quagliarella leading their attack.
