The European football curtain-raiser, the Super Cup. Will this year be contested by Liverpool and Chelsea. It will be officiated by Stephanie Frappart.
According to the story from Sky Sports, will be the first major UEFA men’s match for which a female referee will be in charge.
The 35-year-old French woman will lead not only lead out the teams, but also her own team.
Her match day officials are predominantly female. The game is to be played on August 14th at Besiktas Park in Istanbul, Turkey.
Her team of officials is Manuela Nicolosi of France and Michelle O’Neal from the Republic of Ireland who will be the assistant referees for the match.
This group is UEFA’s top female referees.
This appointment comes hot on the heels of the same group taking charge of the women’s World Cup final last month.
Frappart is no stranger to making history.
She became the first female to officiate a Ligue 1 game. Refereeing the fixture between Amiens and Strausborg.
Following her success, she has been promoted to the top pool of Ligue 1 referees.
Following the announcement UEFA chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti said:
“Stephanie has proved over a number of years that she is one of the best female referees, not just in Europe but across the world.”
“She has the ability to officiate on the biggest stage.”
“She proved at this year’s Women’s World Cup final.”
“I hope this match in Istanbul will provide her with yet more experience as she enters the prime of her refereeing career.”
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said:
“I have said on many occasions that the potential for women’s football has no limits.”
“As an organisation, we place the utmost importance on the development of women’s football in all areas.”
“I hope this is an inspiration to millions of girls and women around Europe and show them there should be no barriers in order to reach one’s dream.”
