Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Gianluigi Buffon will leave them this summer once his contract has expired.

After ending a 17-year spell with Juventus, Buffon made a surprise switch to PSG last summer on a one-season deal that could be extended for another 12 months.

At the age of 41, it was the first time Buffon had ever played club football outside of his native Italy.

However, the Italian had a largely mixed campaign in France that saw him struggle to insert himself as PSG’s first-choice keeper because of Alphonse Areola’s strong form between the posts.

Nonetheless, Buffon still made 25 appearances in all competitions to help PSG retain the Ligue 1 title in dominant fashion.

Although Thomas Tuchel’s side suffered early exits in the Champions League and Coupe de la Ligue, while also experiencing defeat to Rennes in the Coupe de France final.

Therefore, Buffon’s contract at the Parc Des Princes will not be extended for another season.

“Thank you all for everything I have experienced in Paris,” Buffon told the club’s website.

โ€œThank you for the emotions we have shared. Twelve months ago, I arrived at Paris Saint-Germain filled with enthusiasm, welcomed by the incredible warmth of the fans. It was really moving. Thank you, once again, sincerely.

“I leave happy to have enjoyed this experience which has helped me grow. Today my adventure outside Italy ends.

“I would like to thank the chairman, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the whole club and my teammates. I wish you all the best, convinced that together you will write pages of a wonderful story.”

Buffon added: “Ernest Hemingway wrote that there are only two places in the world where people can live happily: at home and in Paris.

“Today onwards, this will also apply to me: Paris, in some way, will always remain my home… Allez Paris! Thank you and good luck with everything!โ€

Buffon is yet to announce his future plans now that he will leave PSG.
