Inter Milan have confirmed their capture of Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United in a reported deal of €80m.
Lukaku had been on Inter’s radar for months following Antonio Conte’s arrival as manager. For his debut campaign at the San Siro, the Italian made it crystal clear he wanted the United forward leading his attack.
The 26-year-old was also looking for a way out of Old Trafford this summer as Marcus Rashford had leapfrogged him in the United pecking order. So, he was keen to end his eight-year spell in the Premier League for a fresh start in the Serie A.
A move to Juventus, though, at one point seemed a possibility in a trade deal involving Paulo Dybala. However, United eventually pulled out and opened the door for Inter to sign Lukaku.
And, despite the many ups and downs in their attempts to convince the Red Devils into a suitable transfer fee, Inter finally got their man on Wednesday when he arrived in Milan for a medical.
The Nerazzurri then confirmed that Lukaku is a done deal on Thursday afternoon.
“Inter were the only club I wanted, because Inter is Not For Everyone. I’m here to bring the Nerazzurri back to the top,” the Belgian told the club’s website.
Lukaku has signed a five-year contract at the San Siro and will earn an annual salary of €8.5m plus bonuses.
While Inter haven’t confirmed anything yet, it’s likely he will take Mauro Icardi’s No. 9 jersey for next season.
The Italian giants are, of course, still trying to offload Icardi this summer following a breakdown in contract talks.
