Wayne Rooney will join Phillip Cocu’s staff at Derby County as a player-coach.
As we brought you earlier at Ronaldo.com Wayne Rooney was back in England discussing a potential move back from the USA.
The deal signed, sealed and delivered.
Rooney will join up with his new club in January.
He has put pen to paper on an 18-month deal.
The agreement will see him continue in a playing capacity but also become an integral part of manager Phillip Cocu’s backroom staff.
Rooney himself said:
“I am sure I can make a big contribution and can’t wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters.”
He will complete the MLS season, which will be over no later than November.
This will give him ample time to recuperate from a full season at DC United. Then be ready to help his new club complete their push for promotion back to the Premier League.
He went on to say:
“I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby have provided me with. ”
“I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff, and the first-team squad from the start of January.”
Cocu said of the signing:
“It is an exciting prospect for him to be joining Derby County.”
“He can bring so much to this squad, both on and off the pitch.”
“He has enjoyed a wonderful career, both in club football and for England, and he still has so much to give as well.”
” I am looking forward to working with Wayne from the start of next year and welcoming him to the club.”
