He was considered as one of the main contenders for the prize and in the end, he is the winner. French striker Olivier Giroud was awarded for an amazing scorpion kick against Crystal Palace in the Premier League match.

The effort of the Frenchman earned him the main prize as he scored a flicked volley with his left foot – and this goal was announced as the best one at a ceremony held in London on Monday. There were three choices after the final cut was made and the contederds were also Under-17 women’s striker Deyna Castellanos and South African goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.

The former striker of French side Montpellier was obviously very happy as he said, according to ESPN: “First of all I have to say it’s an honour for me. I’m delighted to receive this trophy today in front of legends of football. Now l’d just like to thank the people who voted for me. I would like to congratulate the 10 nominees who scored amazing goals too. Obviously I would like to thank my teammates, without them I couldn’t score maybe this goal, and my family.”

There were a lot of legends attending the event – for example Diego Maradona, Ronaldo or former Chelsea player Frank Lampard. As the ceremony continued by awarding of the further prizes, there were also players like Harry Kane or Sergio Ramos waiting for their opportunity to appear on the stage.

Olivier Giroud started his career in Grenoble, then he played for Tours, Istres and Montpellier – and in Montpellier he finally broke through as he managed to score 33 goals in 73 appearances and helped his side to win a very surprising Ligue 1 title. Now the French finisher is a part of Arsene Wenger’s squad and he has scored 70 goals for Arsenal so far, while appearing in 170 matches.
