The French giants were cheering on for the Blues at the Europa League final against Arsenal in order to directly qualify for next season’s Champions League group stage
Following Chelsea’s 4-1 win over London rivals Arsenal, the French Ligue 1 outfit has managed to secure a direct route to the group stages of the 2019/20 edition of the UEFA Champions League.
As reported by France Football, Les Gones needed Chelsea to beat Arsenal in order to avoid a third round playoff game and they got what they wished for. Goals from Eden Hazard, Pedro and Olivier Giroud ensured that Maurizio Sarri’s first season in English football ended with a trophy.
However, the ramifications of the result crossed the English Channel to the Rhone district of France. Chelsea had already qualified for the group stages of the competition but Arsenal needed to win in order to get a qualification round for the group stages.
Unfortunately though, Unai Emery’s charges did not do themselves any favors after a dismal display for the majority of the game.
Eden Hazard, who faced Lyon quite a few times during his time in France with Lille, made sure to send a departing gift to both Chelsea and Lyon. The Belgian scored two goals in what is likely to be his last game for Chelsea before he joins Real Madrid.
Lyon are no strangers to benefiting from such a scenario. Last year, Atletico Madrid’s win in the Europa League final also gave the French giants a direct route to the group stages of the competition.
And the Rhone giants would be happy to see things work out in their favor as the club now looks to start preparing for next season.
New sports director, Juninho is keen on tackling the recruitment part of the summer as early as possible. With the Champions League not an immediate concerned, the Brazilian can focus on other things for now.
