Manchester United are the only team aside from Manchester City able to afford the signing of the Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, says Gabriele Marcotti.
Koulibaly has emerged as Manchester City’s top defensive target for the upcoming transfer window, but Manchester United are long-term admirers of the Napoli star.
Over the past couple of years, the 29-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League.
Although no offers have come to the Partenopei’s headquarters as of yet, the Serie A giants believe no other than the Manchester sides can afford Koulibaly.
According to European football pundit Gabriele Marcotti, Napoli have yet to throw away the possibility of the Senegalese’s summer departure.
“From Napoli’s perspective, I think they feel there is a chance that he’s going to go,” Marcotti said on the Transfer Talk podcast.
“But they also feel that the only other club other than City that could come in for him potentially is Manchester United.
“They don’t feel there is anybody else in Europe who has the means to make them the kind of offer they would accept.”
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola sees Kouliably as an upgrade to injury-prone Aymeric Laporte and out-of-sorts John Stones.
Since he did not manage to replace former captain Vincent Kompany last summer, the Spaniard is keen to add to his defensive options now.
With Stones, Eric Garcia, and Nicolas Otamendi all linked with a move away from the Etihad, Guardiola could launch an assault on Koulibaly in the coming months.
But, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also desperate to find a reliable partner for Harry Maguire after Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly both had ups and downs throughout 2019/20.
Manchester United returned to the Champions League after a year-long absence and are expected to reinforce their squad ahead of the new season.
