Opinion: Atletico Madrid is the Champions League’s favorite

After their victory against Juventus, all the books in Europe now have Atletico Madrid as one of the favorites to win the Champions League.

Atletico Madrid’s dominant performance against Juventus last Wednesday is the living proof that a single match can change your odds in the blink of an eye, the Colchoneros dominated the Vecchia Signora without too many problems and that catapulted them to the first spots of all the books in Europe.

Diego Simeone’s squad wasn’t coming with too much confidence for this match due to their recent results in both La Liga and Copa del Rey, they got eliminated by Girona in the Spanish Cup and they just recovered La Liga’s second position thanks to the same Catalan club that defeated Real Madrid last Sunday.

The season has been a roller coaster for Atletico Madrid but a single constant has remained, their ultimate goal this season is to reach the dream Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and lift their first ever European Championship in history.

There may be other clubs that are also considered favorites to win the competition, but Atletico Madrid is the squad that currently has everything working out for them and the one that broke the odds last Wednesday after beating Cristiano Ronaldo’s squad.

It was a very convincing performance by the Spanish club that will be talked about for the next couple of weeks.

Getting to dominate the full 90 minutes against this new version of Juventus, is something that not many clubs can do at this point of the season and the main reason why manager Diego Simeone celebrated in such a scandalous way when Gimenez scored that first goal for Atletico Madrid.

Juventus was coming in as the main favorite to not only beat the Colchoneros but also win the whole competition by the end of the season due to their latest signing, Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

But ‘Cholo’ had a specific plan for their best player on the pitch, and he also had a plan to play attacking football against one of the most competitive teams in European football right now.

Watching the Atletico players attempt to create offensive football in a match that we believed would be highly defensive was a very pleasant surprise, yet another one of the reasons why we believe that all the books in Europe are now thinking that getting to that final at their own stadium by the end of the season is actually possible.

Juventus v Club de Atletico Madrid - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: Second Leg

Opinion: Juventus to go all-in in the Champions League next season

Juventus will start their pre-season in six days against Tottenham in the International Champions Cup, but let's talk about their objectives for the 2019-20 campaign.

The odds are not completely on Atletico Madrid’s favor, but they have already escalated several positions on the list.

Before the match against Juventus, Atletico Madrid was amongst the top 12 squads who were favored to win the competition according to Diario AS.

After the final whistle at the Wanda Metropolitano, the Colchoneros jumped all the way up to the fifth position just below squads like Manchester City (absolute favorites), FC Barcelona (second place), PSG (third), and Real Madrid (fourth).

This means that Atletico Madrid still has some wiggle room to even go further up after the return leg at Juventus Stadium assuming that they eliminate the Italian giants from the competition.

Being the possible host for the final is one of the cards that is already starting to play in Atletico Madrid’s favor this season, but most of the credit should go to manager Diego Simeone and his tactics against one of the biggest favorites to win the competition because they had Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pragmatic approach from the Argentine manager and his players is finally starting to pay off, every single Atletico Madrid fan woke up with a smile on their face this Thursday and with the hope that playing another final is actually possible.
