When the summer transfer window comes around, you can be confident that Everton will have plenty of plans. Top of their priorities will be securing Andre Gomes on a permanent transfer.
Gomes joined the Blues from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. His one-year loan deal has looked like the bargain of the year for much of the campaign.
After initially struggling to get into the team, Gomes has become a vital part of it. He is the main man in Marco Silva’s side, with much of what they do well under the Portuguese boss coming from and centering around Gomes ability on the ball and off it.
Even when he struggled in the middle of the campaign, as a result of a lack of fitness and Everton’s poor form, it was still evident that the Toffees have a classy player on their hands. Gomes is excellent on the ball, he can maintain possession, pick passes through the lines and control the tempo of the game as well.
On his best day, he is the complete midfielder, equally good at the defensive aspects of the game as he is going forward. He’s certainly a fan favourite at Goodison Park. Most Evertonians believe him to be the midfielder that Everton have lacked since Mikel Arteta left for Arsenal a number of years ago.
Gomes has not quite hit Arteta’s levels of consistency for the Blues yet, but it is easy to see why they would make a comparison. It is likewise easy to see why the club is so keen to make his move a permanent one. Marco Silva has built this team around Gomes and losing him would be a disaster.
Fortunately, it appears that a deal can be done. Barcelona are looking to clean up their squad this season, particularly after paying big money for Frenkie de Jong, and Gomes will be on the chopping block. If reports are accurate, the Catalan giants have set a £30 million asking price on his head. That is undoubtedly a price Everton could afford as well.
Unfortunately, it is the kind of deal that other clubs will be looking at as well. Given his performances, this season, £30 million for Gomes is a bargain that most won’t be able to resist. There will be plenty of suitors for Gomes’ signature, and most will come from the Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly an interested party, and it’s easy to see why. After selling Mousa Dembele, Gomes would walk straight into Spurs midfield. It’s easy to see him being a perfect fit for the way that Mauricio Pochettino likes his team to play. The finances of the move definitely make it attractive for them.
Other top six teams will think the same. Gomes would walk into Arsenal’s midfield at present. He walked around most of them on Sunday afternoon anyway. He’d also be an excellent fit for Chelsea’s midfield as well.
Across Europe, there will be teams thinking he’s a bargain worth taking a risk on. The likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan would all consider him an improvement on what they currently have.
The good news for Everton is that Gomes appears happy on Merseyside. He’s enjoyed his first year at the club, loves the club and is clearly sold on the project. That may all play into the Blues hands. Make no mistake, though, they face a fight to get him this summer.
