Matthijs de Ligt is expected to complete his medical at Juventus today and sign a 5-year contract with the Italian champions.

AFC Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt has finally made up his mind, deciding to accept Cristiano Ronaldo’s invitation and join Juventus FC.

The 19-year old has been a real hit in the Champions League last season, captaining AFC Ajax to the semi-finals of the competition.

In December 2018, De Ligt won the Golden Boy award, becoming the first defender to win it.

Two months later, the teenager became the youngest ever captain in a Champions League knockout game at 19 years and 186 days old, leading Ajax in a Round of 16 encounter against Real Madrid.

He established himself as the most talented defender in the world at the moment, attracting the interest of many European giants. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, PSG… all of these clubs contacted the youngster during the previous months in probably the most interesting transfer saga this summer.

In the end, he decided to join the Bianconeri and flew to Turin last night for his medical tests before officially signing for the club.

And, in our opinion, the young defender has made the right choice. First of all, at Juventus, he will be able to learn from two of the best defenders in the past decade – Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

Both defenders are in their mid-thirties at the moment and have very big experience in football. They’ve won 15 Serie A championships between them and represented Juventus in two Champions League finals.

De Ligt can really learn a lot from them during the next few years and improve his game on another level.

He will also get minutes in the first team, as Chiellini, who will be 35 in August is expected to have restricted minutes from the next campaign, with the Dutch defender taking over his responsibilities in the Juventus defensive line.

The pressure for the teenager will also be on a lower level, compared to the levels at Real Madrid or Barcelona, while the atmosphere is not as toxic as the one at Manchester United or Paris Saint-Germain.

De Ligt will have the opportunity to play with Cristiano Ronaldo in the same team and will be able to learn from him as well. They may not play in the same position, but the Portuguese is one of the fittest players at 34-years old and can help the youngster to develop and form his body in the next years.

We’re really excited to see Matthijs de Ligt play in a top-level club next season and see him become the best defender in the world in the near future.
