Opinion – Manchester United should seriously consider replacing Solskjaer with Allegri

Massimiliano Allegri leaving Juventus this summer has opened up an exciting option for Manchester United.

While they are more than happy with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge, the opportunity to get Allegri in the dugout is one that they cannot afford to pass up.

Solskjaer enjoyed a strong start to life at Old Trafford, turning their fortunes around and impressing everyone. However, those heady days of his reign are long gone. United endured a disastrous end to the campaign, missed out on the Champions League and emphasised to everyone how big a rebuilding job is needed.

Solskjaer does not have enough experience for such a job. He has no experience of managing a big European side, never mind having to rebuild an entire squad. Nor does he have the gravitas to attract big-name players to the club.

The big, talented players that United want to bring the club this summer will look at the managerial situation and think twice. Players want to play for the prominent managers as much as they want to play for the big clubs. United are currently not big enough of a draw to pull the player in on their own.

Their only option this summer is to offer high wages, a situation they don’t want to put themselves in again, particularly given the money they’ve wasted in recent years. Alexis Sanchez is the perfect example of that. Allegri could fix that problem in an instant. He’s a big name manager that big players want to play for.

Furthermore, he has vast experience of working with big-name players. His time at Juventus has seen him working with some of the biggest in the business and getting the best out of him. Even the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, the most prominent personality in world football, did little to affect his Juventus dressing room this year.

That’s what Manchester United need. They require a manager who can wrestle control back from a dressing room dominated by prominent personalities. The likes of Paul Pogba and Antony Martial, to name two, need a manager who can be ruthless. As Wayne Rooney put it recently, they need a manager who they fear. Allegri is a manager who can do both things.

He’s also a manager adept at rebuilding squads. There’s no denying United need a complete overhaul this summer and who better to do it than the man who has rebuilt Juventus over the last five years? Each season Allegri needed to change up his team, with every summer seeing him reinvent the side. At no point did that ever affect the team. Allegri constantly rebuilt the team but always had them competing domestically and in Europe. It was his steady, guiding hand that made the difference. United need that now more than ever.

Of course, United are seemingly pleased with Solskjaer in charge at this moment in time. They have decided to go back to the past with their setup, and he is at the forefront of that. Indeed, a bad run of form has not seemed to ruin his standing at the club.

Yet, if they want to turn around their fortunes, Allegri is the kind of manager they need. He has the gravitas, experience, and know how to turn things around at Old Trafford. Manchester United cannot afford to pass up this opportunity to get a world-class coach.
