Opinion: Messi should’ve rejected the call from Argentina

We tell you why we believe that Lionel Messi’s decision to play for Argentina this month could be the worst decision he could’ve made this season.

Now that we know Lionel Messi is officially coming back to the Argentina National Team after a long hiatus, we really believe that this was the worst time to make this decision due to his current situation at FC Barcelona.

The Argentine star is currently on the brink of possibly having another one of the best seasons of his career at club level, he has lined up both La Liga and Copa del Rey to pretty much win both titles by the end of the season but he still hasn’t secured the fifth Champions League of his career.

Messi needs as much rest as he can get at this point of the season, his body is already telling him that he needs to pick his battles wisely and not risk any injuries in matches that really have no importance to win any trophies.

Argentina’s next two matches will be against Venezuela and Morrocco by the end of March, two friendly matches that have no importance for him and a completely unnecessary trip that he has to make in order to represent his country.

Even if we think that Lionel Messi’s decision is completely wrong, we do understand the reason he is making it but this is simply not the best timing for it.

Granted, manager Lionel Scaloni made the choice alongside Leo Messi to let the player perform in only one of these matches.

The first game for Argentina will be against Venezuela at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, this means that Messi won’t really have to make a major trip and he won’t really be tired after the international break is over.

However, we wouldn’t oppose to the Barcelona star playing this match if we didn’t genuinely think it was a risk for his fitness.

We have to remember that Lionel Messi has been under muscular stress in the most recent games for the Catalan club, manager Ernesto Valverde is even thinking about letting him rest for the match against Rayo Vallecano next Saturday because he is thinking about the crucial Champions League game vs Olympique Lyonnais from next week.

Having Leo make the trip to Madrid to play for Argentina during such a crucial part of the season with the muscular problems he’s suffered, is something that the Barcelona technical staff doesn’t really appreciate but the player himself made the final decision because he thinks it’s important for him to create a bond with all the new players from the national team.

Lionel Scaloni’s project from the second half of 2018 after the World Cup was pretty straight-forward, the idea was to find an ideal squad that could surround Lionel Messi and stay competitive enough to compete at next summer’s Copa America in Brazil.

From what we could gather in the three different call-ups that Scaloni made during Lionel Messi’s break from international duties, we could tell that he has a clear idea of the squad that may play up front next to the Barcelona player and he even has plans to pair him with Juventus’ Paulo Dybala.

“Leo will be with us and then we will decide whether he will play one, two, or no matches at all,” said Scaloni via Diario AS.

“He currently is playing too many matches at the highest level and that can cause an important physical draining.”

“During international breaks, there are players who prefer to rest and he made the decision to come, which is fantastic news for us.”

“Messi and Dybala are two players who can be lined up together because both of them are splendid footballers.”

“When you plan the games later, is exactly the moment when they either enter in your plans or they don’t, it all depends on the scenario that presents itself in every match.”
