Opinion: Real Madrid lacks what it takes to win the treble

Let’s talk about the reasons we believe Real Madrid doesn’t have what it takes to win the treble as they prepare to play Ajax on Wednesday.

Winning a treble is an achievement that very few clubs have been able to accomplish in football history, Real Madrid hasn’t won one yet and they might not even be able to do it by the end of the season.

This milestone has only been achieved in the past by Celtic (1966-67), Ajax (1971-72), PSV Eindhoven (1987-88), Manchester United (1998-99), FC Barcelona (2008-09), Internazionale Milano (2009-10), Bayern Munich (2012-13), and FC Barcelona (2014-15).

Only the Catalan club has been able to accomplish this feat twice in history, but Real Madrid has never really been up for the challenge to accomplish this in its whole history.

There is always something that gets in the way of Los Blancos, whether it’s a disastrous La Liga tournament or a very shameful Copa del Rey elimination, there is always a reason they never get to the end of the season with the possibility of getting that elusive treble.

There is a train of thought this season that suggests the players and the manager really believe such a feat is possible this season, but the reality is that they haven’t achieved anything yet.

Copa del Rey seems like the most obvious title they are going to win, they already have a slight advantage against FC Barcelona because they got a good result at Camp Nou in the semifinal’s first leg.

However, the Catalan club didn’t have Lionel Messi at his best and they are praying for them to not get the Argentine fully recovered for the return leg.

We all know how Messi tends to spoil the party for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the Merengues remain hopeful that a miracle can happen.

La Liga is also very similar, Barcelona is still in first place and with six points ahead of Real Madrid but Los Blancos are getting some points back and they are playing fantastic football that could make the Catalan club very nervous during this final stretch of the season.

In a perfect world for Los Blancos, they could actually win both La Liga and Copa del Rey, but their problems are the Champions League.

There are several great squads in the competition this season, it is almost impossible that Real Madrid gets to win a fourth consecutive trophy and they will get eliminated by a club that presents itself more determined than they are.

Ahead of Los Blancos’ Round of 16 matches against Ajax, manager Santiago Solari was questioned about the possibility of winning this competition again.

“Nothing is impossible for Real Madrid. Ajax are very well-known for their work in the youth system, for their commitment to young talent and their offensive football.”

“That’s the way they still work, with a team that has already shown that it was competitive last year and that it remains competitive this year. The tie is going to be difficult, like all these occasions in the Champions League.”

But Thibaut Courtois is the one who went further, as he said this about Real Madrid possibly winning the treble: “I’m not in any doubt at all – Real Madrid aspires to win every competition it plays in,” said Courtois via Diario AS.

“The proof of that can be seen in training every day. We have a well-balanced team and some of the best players in the world in their position.”

“I don’t know one single professional in the game who, with their hand on their heart, thinks that Real Madrid won’t be in the battle for every competition we’re in.”

“Everyone in the squad aspires to winning the lot. And we’ve already won the Club World Cup.”
