Now that Lionel Messi couldn’t win the Copa America, we believe that the road to win the Ballon d’Or is completely open for Virgil van Dijk.
We know this is a hot take but, Virgil van Dijk has an open road to win the 2019 Ballon d’Or.
This might be the first time that a defender wins this accolade since Fabio Cannavaro did it back in 2006, Van Dijk is completely deserving of it.
The season he completed with Liverpool has been one of the most dominant we can remember from any European defender over the last decade.
All Madridistas can say whatever they want about Sergio Ramos in the 2014 season, but Ronaldo and Messi were still at the top of their game back then.
Cut to 2019, Van Dijk was the man who eliminated Leo’s FC Barcelona with his whole Liverpool squad.
We predicted that the ultimate showdown between these two players would be at Anfield Road, and the Dutchman passed the test with flying colors.
Messi’s last chance to win the prize was during this Copa America, he reached the semifinals but he wasn’t able to take his national team all the way to the final.
Argentina was eliminated by Brazil in this instance, the tournament’s hosts didn’t even have Neymar on their squad.
Plus, Leo’s performance throughout the whole competition wasn’t what everybody expected as he only scored a single goal against Paraguay.
It was evident that the Ballon d’Or trophy moved away from Leo this year, all roads point to Virgil.

Messi already will get his prestigious trophy this season anyway, the Barcelona star was this season’s Golden Shoe after scoring 36 goals in La Liga.
This will be Messi’s sixth individual award of this nature, that will be more than enough for him to get for his level of performance in 2019.
There isn’t another player who was as perfect as Virgil van Dijk was throughout the whole season, he only lost the Nations League final against Portugal.
To those who want to include Cristiano Ronaldo on this confrontation, keep in mind that the Portuguese player won the Nations League with the help of his teammates.
All Cristiano did this season was to win the Serie A title in Italy without even reaching the top of the goal-scoring table.
There is no chance for Ronaldo to even get a spot on the podium for this year’s Ballon d’Or, he will miss a nomination as Leo Messi did last year.
In fact, we believe that Ronaldo’s season has been the most inconsequential he’s offered during the last five years for his club or country.
There is only Virgil van Dijk to consider for this spot in the Ballon d’Or trophy, Messi will surely accompany on the podium and we have one more spot left to give out. But who could be that player?
Virgil van Dijk is now the bookmakers’ odds on favourite to lift the Ballon d’Or after Lionel Messi’s Argentina failed to make the Copa America final.
The Dutchman has already picked up the PFA Player of the Season award. 🏆https://t.co/NcXWXMNkOV

Alisson Becker deserves a spot in the podium as well.
It’s become clear now, the Brazil and Liverpool goalkeeper should be the player who deserves to be part of the Ballon d’Or podium in 2019.
This man didn’t only fill the massive void that Loris Karius made even before leaving Liverpool, he also became the best goalkeeper in the world in record time.
We already were extremely satisfied with the season he gave us with the Reds, but his Copa America performance has been just as special.
We honestly had our doubts about him before the semifinal match against Argentina, but he made sure to clear them right up.
With the clean sheet that he completed in the Copa America semifinal, Alisson now has nine consecutive clean sheets between his club and country in all competitions.
There hasn’t been a more dominant goalie than Alisson Becker in the year 2019, Jurgen Klopp and ‘Tite’ are extremely lucky to have him.
Also, more credit to him for being able to win his position in the Brazil squad when he has to compete for the spot against Ederson.
The Manchester city goalie is also a world-class player who deserves to be on Alisson’s spot, but the Liverpool man is the first pick for a good reason.
Jurgen Klopp’s keeps proving he has the best eye for talent in European football at the moment.
It would be great to see both Alisson and Van Dijk sharing the spotlight in the Ballon d’Or gala, with one of them picking up the award.
Alisson told me in exclusive yesterday: “Me for Ballon d’Or? There many skilled players around. I go on the pitch and do my job after meticulously studying and preparing”.
Yesterday Alisson pulled this possibly save of the year on Messi free-kick, and relatively easily pic.twitter.com/IZvXzRTZ18
