New Napoli star Victor Osimhen is relishing the prospect of facing ‘one of the greatest players on earth’ in Cristiano Ronaldo in Italy.
An impressive debut campaign for Lille, that yielded 18 goals and six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions, made Osimhen a man in demand for this summer’s transfer window.
Napoli won the race for the Nigerian forward by forking out a club-record €70m to sign him on a five-year deal, smashing the €39m they paid for Gonzalo Higuain in 2014 by a whopping €31m.
Such a big transfer fee, though, creates high expectations that can be a burden on any elite player. But to his credit, Osimhen is unfazed and hopes to challenge Ronaldo for the Serie A’s top-scorer award, the ‘Capocannoniere’.
The 21-year-old will get his first taste of facing ‘one of the greatest players on earth’ on October 4 when Napoli visit Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.
“I’m really looking forward to a new career here in Serie A. Playing against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo is something one can eagerly wait,” Osimhen told the Caf website.
“While at Lille, I had the opportunity of playing against some of the best players in the world like Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and it would definitely be a whole great experience to play against Ronaldo, who is one of the greatest players on earth. So, I’m looking forward to facing him soon.”
The Lagos-born star will make his Serie A debut away to Parma on Sunday afternoon.
