Gunners legend Tony Adams admits Mesut Ozil is far from his best but has also suffered a lot from controversies on and off the pitch.
From running the show in midfield for Arsenal, Mesut Ozil finds himself a fringe member of the current Gunners squad.
The German is yet to step on the pitch for Mikel Arteta since March and many believe he is more or less on his way out of the club.
Mikel Arteta has hinted all players have to fight for their place in the squad but for Ozil, it looks like there could be more to it.
As it stands, the likely line of action for the Gunners would be to let the 31-year-old leave this summer. However, his wages have proved to be a turnoff for any potential suitor over the past few months.
Ozil is running into the final 12 months of his lucrative contract and Tony Adams questions how the German fell so far from grace. The Gunners legend believes the club would sell him if they get the chance but still believes the German could offer something while still on the club’s books.
The former Arsenal captain told Stadium Astro: “I think I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s a very laid-back kind of guy, he doesn’t get too flustered with anything, to be honest with you. He just goes a little bit – what we would call in our day – going through the motions; but players are very different today, they’re not questioned in training.”
“I think Ozil, he’s a very calm, sweet man, so don’t judge him too quickly. He is a talent, and half the job of a head coach is getting the best out of that talent.”
Ozil has come under scrutiny because of his lucrative contract and Adams thinks that hasn’t made life easier for the German.
“There’s too many outside influences and that’s where I think the Ozil brand comes into it, and the people on the periphery and the agents get involved.”
“Actually, if you look underneath all that, there’s a really sweet human being in there, really shy boy, that has enormous talent, but he’s surrounded by a lot of mess.”
Pressed on whether Ozil has any future at Arsenal, Adams added: “If they get an offer, I think they’ll let him go tomorrow.”
Another Gunners legend in Ian Wright also predicts a likely exit for Ozil this summer.
