Charlie Nicholas thinks Ozil could leave Arsenal because he will get bored of receiving a ‘ridiculous’ wage while being left out of the match-day squad.
Charlie Nicholas believes Mesut Ozil is destined to leave Arsenal sooner than expected.
Much was expected of the German midfielder when he was made the Gunners’ highest-paid player after signing a deal worth £350,000 per week in 2018.
However, things have taken a sour turn for Ozil since then.
Frozen out of the Arsenal squad under Unai Emery, his fortunes have not been any better under Mikel Arteta.
Ozil initially got playing time shortly after Arteta took over but he’s yet to play a single minute of action since the restart. In fact, the 31-year-old is yet to start a single game for Arsenal since March.
Earlier this week, the midfielder’s agent claimed the German intended to see out the rest of his contract which expires in 2021.
But Charlie Nicholas thinks Ozil might end up changing his mind on that decision.
“The wages that Ozil has been getting has been ridiculous, but that’s not his fault,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“That’s down to the committee and the board who gave him the money and said, ‘we think you are well worth this value’. I don’t know how they got to that assumption.
“This is a fabulously talented footballer with a brilliant CV at Real Madrid and at national level, we know that.”
“But Arsenal have struggled to get consistent performances out of him. He doesn’t offer the same guarantee as [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang.”
“Ozil has made so much money and he will be bored. He will be frustrated and fed up, and when he gets the right deal he will eventually move on.”
“He won’t be sitting around with his little umbrella in the sunshine for much longer as it’s a habit of life! He wants to go and play.”
Ozil is set to miss Arsenal’s FA Cup final clash with Chelsea tomorrow and some already think it might be time up for him at the Emirates.
