Sevilla manager Pablo Machin was particularly satisfied to see his side score three times away to Athletic Bilbao in their Copa del Rey last-16 first leg win
Los Rojiblancos emerged 3-1 victors at the San Mames on Thursday with a rotated squad that suggested the main focus was on Sunday’s rematch between the sides in La Liga.
It didn’t take long for Sevilla to break the deadlock with Nolito opening the scoring after six minutes.
Mikel San Jose had equalised for Athletic in the second-half before Andre Silva and Ben Yedder found the net to hand Sevilla a comfortable lead for the return leg in Andalusia.
“It’s not easy scoring away from home and doing it three times is even more complicated,” said Machin on the club website.
“I’m very happy became we’ve shown once again that we are a team. We knew how to compete really well.
“We were able to dominate phases of the game, everyone perfectly fulfilled the plan that gave us face through Nolito’s goal.
“Nobody can reproach the implication that “Nolo” has and today he knew how to make the most of the opportunity. Surely, a good goal will help him gain confidence.”
Machin added that tie is not over yet as in football anything can happen and he praised the quality within his squad after making some rotations.
The return leg between Sevilla and Athletic will take place at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan next Wednesday.
