AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca explained how he felt after defeating Serie C side Gubbio and seeing Amadou Diawara’s debut.
Italian Serie A club AS Roma defeated Serie C side Gubbio 3-0 this evening, much to the delight of manager Paulo Fonseca.
The Giallarossi won thanks to goals by Javier Pastore, Federico Fazio, and Mirko Antonucci.
Fonseca also saw Amadou Diawara’s debut with the club’s jersey.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game after a week of hard physical work in fitness training, but I saw a good response,” he said to Football Italia.
“We’re just at the beginning.”
“I’d say we saw some of the principles of football,” he added.
“We must improve on some things, such as the intensity in defense and the pace of the movements in possession.
About his new player, the manager said: “Diawara has only been training with us for a few days and we tried to explain what he should do.”
“His first game was satisfactory, but we have much to improve in his playing style.”
“We were up against an opponent that was better organized than the others we’ve faced so far in pre-season and were surprised by their tactical intelligence,” he commented.
“They allowed us very little space, so we had to play down the flanks.”
“I’m glad we were able to keep the ball for more, but it’s important to show patience when seeking spaces,” he said.
“It’s early days and the team will improve a lot by the start of the season.”
