Dimitri Payet’s bid to earn a place in the World Cup squad for Russia continues to get stronger with the star now the French player with most assists in the top five European Leagues this season, ahead of the likes of Paul Pogba and Karim Benzema

The Marseille playmaker has been a big influence for the Ligue 1 side in his second year back with the squad and has been involved in six of the club’s last seven goals in all competitions.

Payet returned to the Stade Vélodrome in January 2017  and played a critical role in Marseille’s victory against RB Salzburg in the Europa League semi-finals by assisting all three of their goals in their 3-2 aggregate win over the Austrian Bundesliga champions.

While Payet was overlooked by France boss Didier Deschamps for their recent international break against Colombia and Russia, the former West Ham star previously revealed that he has not given up on the prospect.

“There’s a list that’s been released which I don’t appear in,” said the 31-year-old in March, according to the Ligue 1 website.

“But it’s not the last list. There are two months left for me to do what it takes to punch my ticket to Russia.”
