Leganes coach Mauricio Pellegrino believes that there have been problems with VAR since the opening day of this season and called for equality

VAR has recently come under the spotlight in La Liga due to not calling for a penalty when goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli seemingly fouled Vinicius Junior in Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday.

But Pellegrino, who will take his Leganes side to the Santiago Bernabeu for their Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash with Real tonight, insists the problems with VAR started long before then.

“What I recall from the first matchday, there have been VAR errors and controversial moves,” said Pellegrino, according to AS.

“I would like to see the actions of Huesca, Villarreal, Leganés, Barcelona, Athletic, Celta..treated equally.

“Now it seems that it’s an interpretational system in a Real Madrid game. As a coach, I believe that all plays should be given the same importance. From day one, there have been plays that have had a preponderance in a result.”

However, the former Valencia and Liverpool defender remains a supporter of the video technology and acknowledges that everyone can make mistakes.

“I’m in favour of VAR. It can help us,” added Pellegrino.

“It’s a tool that is here to help us. As a coach, it can harm and benefit us. Like almost everyone.

“It’s complicated when it’s on you. Then it’s difficult to be rational and analysis when you are emotionally involved. A lot has happened to us. It’s difficult to analyse the entire context of La Liga.

“For me, Spain has good referees, good professionals and we all make mistakes. Every 10 days, there are always controversial moves that are either punished or not.

“I would like for all plays to be given the same importance.”

Real Madrid and Leganes will kick-off their Copa del Rey match at 21:30 (CET).
