Florentino Perez has finally admitted that Real Madrid unsuccessfully tried to sign Robert Lewandowski and Paul Pogba, but remained coy on Kylian Mbappe.
Perez’s interest in signing Lewandowski for Real, of course, comes as no big surprise given the striker’s prolific form at Bayern Munich.
The Polish scoring machine has bagged an incredible 198 goals in just 247 appearances for Bayern. It prompted talk of a switch to Los Blancos last year as a replacement for record-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.
Lewandowski, in fact, even confessed in March that he turned down Real in the past despite pleas from Ronaldo and captain Sergio Ramos.
Meanwhile, Perez’s attempts to sign wantaway Manchester United star Pogba has been one of Real’s worst-kept secrets. Although the 26-year-old remains at Old Trafford, and will likely stay there for another season at least.
“There are players who do not sell,” Perez told reporters on Wednesday.
“For Lewandowski, we have gone for several years for him and nothing because he has no clause and they don’t sell him.
“There is no way and that has happened to us with Pogba. When certain players are sold, we can go for them.”
Despite his failed attempts at landing Lewandowski and Pogba, however, reports continue to link Perez with a big-money move for Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar, who is under contract until June 2022, has set the world alight with his stunning development. He even finished last season with an impressive 33 goals in just 29 Ligue 1 games.
But Perez, who also wants Mbappe’s PSG team-mate Neymar, chose to remain coy on a move for the talented 20-year-old.
“Of course we like a Frenchman that they say out there and we’ll go for him,” said the Real president.
“But they don’t sell him.”
While he failed in landing some of his top targets, though, Perez did still manage to pull off a big coup in signing Eden Hazard from Chelsea in the summer.
