Carles Perez came through the ranks at Camp Nou but was ushered through the exit door in January to Serie A side AS Roma.
Playing for Barcelona is the ultimate goal of La Masia graduates. Young Carles was one of those who were knocking on the doors of the first team.
Ernesto Valverde even gave him an extended run, as he amassed 12 competitive appearances.
However, as Valverde was ushered out, Perez found himself on the move as well. The Granollers native was sent on a six-month loan to AS Roma, which became permanent this summer.
Perez features regularly for the Romans and is now a first-team member. However, he cannot understand what led to his transfer as it was a surprise for him.
“For me, it was a surprise that they decided to dispense with me,” Perez was quoted by Evening Standard. “I consider that I didn’t deserve that.”
“Ever since the ‘cadete’ team (around the age of 16), I had offers to leave Barca, some of them from England.”
“And even when I was at Barca B, I had offers from LaLiga teams and I always said ‘no’ because I wanted to get to the first team.”
The exciting winger believes that he had a bright future at Camp Nou after making the most of opportunities that came his way.
“Later, I had opportunities and I think I took advantage of them as much as I could. In fact, I even earned a contract as a player in the first team.”
Perez made 26 appearances for AS Roma and Barcelona, hitting the back of the net 4 times whilst also laying down 6 assists.
