Peter Schmeichel has chosen an unlikely candidate as his pick for his current best player in the Manchester United squad.
Red Devils legend Peter Schmeichel left a number of club supporters stunned in his pick for his best among the United players.
The 56-year-old spent eight seasons at Manchester United, racking up almost 400 appearances and cementing his status as one of the club’s best ever goalkeepers.
Schmeichel was also part of United’s treble winning side in the 1998/99 season, playing alongside the likes of David Beckham and Roy Keane.
He has been succeeded by some equally brilliant goal-keepers in Edwin Van Der Sar and current no 1 David De Gea, who is only four appearances shy of matching that of the ex-United goalkeeper himself.
And with a squad, that boasts the likes of the Spaniard, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, the former goalkeeper chose to go for an unexpected choice.
In a Twitter Q&A session on Monday, Schmeichel was asked the question by a United supporter.
And he simply replied: “Fred.”
Fred was equally honoured to be recognized by a club legend and responded to the tweet, while dubbing Schmeichel the best goalkeeper in the club’s history.
Fred was named the club’s Player of the Month in January and is currently a strong contender to win the United player of the season award.
