Barcelona battled their way to victory at Getafe with some controversy surrounding the host’s goal controversially ruled out for a perceived foul on Clement Lenglet.

Real Madrid was defeated on Sunday with its own much criticism about VAR’s use and Barca defender Gerard Pique says that it is in Spanish people’s nature to find controversy where there is none.

“When there was no VAR it was because there was no VAR,” the defender said after the game via Marca.

“When there is, it’s because there is.

“I’ve already said it, but in this country we love controversy and that is why there are programs that live off of controversy, it’s cultural.

“VAR helps the referee and that is the important thing.”

Pique has also shown his support for the Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde

Berbatov is confident United will eliminate Barca

Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has tipped his former side to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League quarter-final. Barca are considered favourites to progress with...

“It’s a decision that he will make and he will respect because he is the coach,” Pique added.

“We would be delighted if his decided to continue and he is doing a magnificent job.

“He brings calmness and he is producing results and showing that his way works.”

Barcelona are now five points clear at the top of LaLiga Santander and ten ahead of Real Madrid, but Pique doesn’t believe the title race is over.

“I don’t know if it’s a major blow to LaLiga, in terms of the points between us and the rivals.

“It’s always good to come back from the Christmas break with a win.

“I think it’s years since we did it.”
