In what came as a surprising decision by the Juve head coach, the No.7 was taken off the pitch with 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
Cristiano Ronaldo was “happy and smiling in the dressing room”, says Andrea Pirlo as he explains subbing his star man off during the match against Inter Milan.
Ronaldo opened the scoring at the 24-minute mark as he tapped home on rebound after his penalty attempt was saved by Samir Handanovic.
The forward was replaced by Alvaro Morata in the second half. It was a rather surprising decision by Pirlo especially considering Juve, 1-2 down at the time, were in desperate need of a goal and playing with 10 men.
However, it’s fair to say the Old Lady didn’t miss the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as not only did they find the equalizer but also clinched a 3-2 win.
“I think it was the first time he was happy to be subbed off,” Pirlo said on Ronaldo’s reaction, speaking to Sky Sport Italia post-match.
We were one man down, and he’d have been chasing shadows. He was happy and smiling in the dressing room.”
Pirlo added on the Juventus team: “This group has a lot to give, we have many young players, but playing for Juventus means having more responsibility. It takes time to adapt.
“We shouldn’t have dropped so many points, but this is a good team, we have room for improvement, there is a good base to work well.”
