Pochettino: “Christian Eriksen unaffected by transfer rumours”

Mauricio Pochettino believes Christian Eriksen hasn’t lost focus on Tottenham’s campaign despite lingering doubts over his future.

After starring in a cameo during Spurs’ opening day win over Aston Villa, Pochettino restored Eriksen to the line-up for last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Admittedly, though, the Danish playmaker had a forgettable performance and couldn’t make any impact. He, in fact, was outshined by his City counterparts Kevin De Bruyne and Rodrigo.

Part of the reason for Eriksen’s low-key display at the Etihad Stadium could’ve been down to the near-constant rumours surrounding his future.

With the 27-year-old out of contract next summer, top European clubs have been lining up with some enticing offers. At the top of the list is allegedly Serie A champions Juventus and La Liga giants Real Madrid.

But Pochettino is confident he can count on Eriksen to perform for Spurs’ Premier League match against Newcastle United.

“I always tell the player to not be affected by the rumours,” said Pochettino, according to Yahoo.

“In this situation, there is nothing to say, because still, we have one more year on his contract. It’s not the best situation for him, for everyone.

“He’s acting naturally. You cannot put a finger on the problem. You need to try to help.

“I understand the club, I understand the player. You try to minimise the problem, try to treat the situation.

“This is an important player who needs to help the team with his performances to get positive results.”

Spurs boss Pochettino added: “Christian has a personality and a character that… he’s involved, and he’s not affected by the rumours or situation surrounding him.”

Eriksen has managed 66 goals and 86 assists in 279 appearances for Spurs since joining from Ajax in 2013 for €13.50m.

Widely regarded as one the Premier League’s best playmakers. the Dane seemingly isn’t short of offers as he continues to debate his Spurs future.
