Premier League Team of the Week (Match day 1)

The Premier League season is back in town and the opening match day saw results that could define how the season pans out.

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool clearly announced their Premier League intentions on the opening day following comprehensive victories. Brighton on the other hand, produced the biggest shock of the week after a 3-0 win over Watford.

Here we give a lowdown of the team of the week based on how players from each team performed.

Ederson (Manchester City)

City are keen on holding on to their Premier League title and following a 5-0 win, it is clear that this team is not going to relinquish the gong so easily. Pep Guardiola’s men didn’t have much defending to do but when called upon, Ederson was in great form and showcased why he is considered the best in the world.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United)

Even though he had a great season, the young full-back’s Premier League debut for United was going to be the real test. And the former Crystal Palace man showed just why the Red Devils were so keen on signing him.

Wan-Bissaka showed great pace and tackling throughout the game and was solid at the back alongside fellow summer signing Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire (Manchester United)

All talk of being the most expensive defender was shushed by the Premier League stalwart on his Manchester United debut. Oozing with calmness and composure, the England international never looked like a man who was playing for a new team.

Lewis Dunk (Brighton)

Brighton were tipped for a horror 2019/20 campaign. However, Graham Potter has made a great start to his managerial career following a 3-0 win over Watford. Dunk was perhaps the most important player on the pitch with one goal-line clearance and then providing an assist for Neil Maupay to score on his debut.

Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City)

The Belgian international remains a Premier League assist king and in the West Ham mauling, provided an assist.

Paul Pogba (Manchester United)

He might not have wanted to stay at Old Trafford but Pogba turned in a really professional display as the Red Devils made a great start to the Premier League campaign with a 4-0 win over Chelsea at home.

Mo Salah (Liverpool)

The Egypt international is going to be another one of the best Premier League players of the season and scored a typical Salah goal in the 4-1 win over Norwich. He also provided an assist for Virgil van Dijk’s first goal of the new campaing.

Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

The England international scored a hat-trick on City’s opening Premier League game and looked sharp throughout the encounter. Sterling has definitely become one of the finest attacking players in the continent and is going to get stronger as the season progresses.

Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

The Englishman scored the opening goal via a penalty and then scored his second following a sublime pass from Paul Pogba.

Ashley Barnes (Burnley)

Nowadays, it is very rare to see a strike partnership. However, Burnley do things differently. Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood have developed quite a partnership and it was the former who scored a brace in the 3-0 win over Southampton.

Harry Kane (Tottenham)

While Aston Villa did threaten Spurs’ Premier League aspirations on day one, Harry Kane came with the goods, scoring a brace late on as the Londoners came from behind to register a 3-1 win.
