Preview: DFB-Pokal semi-finals

The DFB-Pokal semi-finals are on the schedule this week, as Hamburger, LB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and Werder Bremen are the four teams still alive in the competition.

We will have a new winner of the German Cup this season, as title defenders, Eintracht Frankfurt have been knocked out in the first round of the competition by Regionalliga Sudwest side SSV Ulm.

Last season’s finalists Bayern Munich are the favorites to win the DFB-Pokal this season, but any kind of surprises are not ruled out at the moment.

They travel to Werder Bremen on Wednesday night, while Hamburger host RB Leipzig in the first semi-final of the competition one day before.

Hamburger SV vs RB Leipzig

Hamburger SV are not enjoying the most successful period in the history of the club. They are currently playing in the 2. Bundesliga, after being knocked out for of top-flight German football last season for the first time ever.

However, the Red Shorts have managed to qualify for their first DFB-Pokal semi-finals in 10 years, where they host RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

Leipzig, on the other hand, was founded in May 2009 and they are chasing their first-ever German Cup Final.

Both clubs have met only four times in history, with three of those games finishing with a victory for the visiting side. The visitors are the favorites in this one as well, as RB Leipzig have won their last eight away games across all competitions.

Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Klose: “Lewandowski is 10 times better than I ever was!”

While Miroslav Klose is one of Germany's greatest footballers, the ex-Bayern Munich striker reckons he wasn't anywhere near as good as Robert Lewandowski.

Timo Werner and Yussuf Poulsen are their most dangerous men, as both strikers have each scored a total of 18 goals this season.

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich are chasing a domestic double, after a disappointing European campaign, as they were knocked out in the Champions League round of 16 by Liverpool.

The Bavarians travel to Bremen on Wednesday night for their tenth consecutive DFB-Pokal semi-finals and chase their 19th trophy in the competition.

Werder Bremen haven’t reached the German Cup Final since 2010 when they lost 4-0 to their next opponents. They have won their last trophy one season before, which was their sixth crown in the history of the competition.

The Green-Whites eliminated Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16, while reached the semi-finals of the Pokal after beating Schalke 2-0 at the Veltins-Arena.

Bayern, on the other hand, played an exciting quarter-final tie against 2. Bundesliga side Heidenheim, which finished 5-4 in favor of the German champions.

The Bavarians have won all of the last 20 games against Werder Bremen. Their last defeat against the Green-Whites came in September 2008.
