Thomas Tuchel confirmed Paris Saint-Germain are in talks over a possible transfer for goalkeeper Alphonse Areola amid Real Madrid interest.
Areola, who is a product of PSG’s youth academy, has impressed greatly over the past few seasons in France. He, in fact, has kept 53 clean sheets in just 107 first-team appearances.
The 26-year-old’s strong form led to Gianluigi Buffon leaving PSG this summer after learning he would be Areola’s back-up this season. The legendary goalkeeper has since returned to Juventus, where he now operates as second-choice behind Wojciech Szczesny.
PSG, however, may rue their decision to allow Buffon to leave now. Apparently, Real Madrid have begun talks for a shock swoop of Areola before Monday’s European transfer deadline.
Fueling the rumours was Areola sitting on the bench in favour of 19-year-old Marcin Bulka for Friday’s match against Metz.
And now Tuchel has confirmed that PSG may lose their number one this summer. However, he didn’t name the club pursuing the France international.
“(That’s) possible, yes,” the German told beIN SPORTS on whether Areola’s played his final game.
“There are negotiations between clubs and Alphonse. That’s why he decided to not play.”
Bulka, who joined PSG from Chelsea this summer, kept a clean sheet on his Ligue 1 debut as Parisians cruised to a 2-0 victory at Metz.
Angel Di Maria got the ball running by scoring an 11th-minute penalty before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added a second before the break. Therefore, PSG have made it three wins out of four in their opening games of the new Ligue 1 season.
The win, though, was somewhat overshadowed by a banner in the stands with a homophobic message. It caused the referee to delay the first-half, while the officials removed the message.
Now attention turns back to Areola’s future as PSG supporters face a tense couple days waiting to find out what will happen.
One possible outcome of this saga could be that Real trade Keylor Navas as part of the agreement. With Thibaut Courtois the clear number one, however, it’s uncertain what kind of role awaits Areola in the Spanish capital.
The 26-year-old only signed a new long-term contract at the Parc Des Princes last December.
