With a brace from Angel Di Maria, PSG proved they didn’t need their biggest stars in order to humble Real Madrid in Paris.

The day in which Parc des Princes opened its doors to host Real Madrid finally came, PSG was ready for this first UEFA Champions League challenge.

The French giants were extremely handicapped due to the absence of their three biggest stars on the attack.

Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe were injured and would certainly miss the game.

Meanwhile, Neymar was suspended for the first two games of the season for an indiscipline incident from last season.

All three stars witnessed the game from the stands, they were rooting for the best possible squad that Thomas Tuchel was able to put together.

This was the ideal opportunity for stars such as Mauro Icardi or Angel Di Maria to prove that Paris Saint-Germain had more great players than just the ones that missed this game.

Real Madrid was not as limited for this game, their starting eleven had Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema on the attack.

Zinedine Zidane decided to use a surprising 4-2-3-1 formation with James Rodriguez right behind the French striker.

Both Bale and Hazard played as the wingers, this formation was extremely competitive on paper.

However, PSG was a more compact squad and they hardly allowed the Spaniards to have the ball.

The first half granted us the classic “law of the ex”, which consists on a player scoring against his former club.

In this case, Angel Di Maria was the one who scored not one but two goals against his former club.

The first goal came early in the first half, he got it after a Juan Bernat assist from the left.

His shot appeared to come easy for Thibaut Courtois, but the Belgian goalkeeper made a terrible mistake by allowing this ball to get past him.

That was only the first goal of the first half, PSG got an increasing amount of chances that proved Real Madrid is not going through their best moment.

Zinedine Zidane is clearly struggling to find the proper playing system for this team that lacks midfielders.

With the injured Luka Modric and Marco Asensio, it was clear that Los Blancos needed to find new players during the transfer market.

Today, this lack of footballers was painfully evident. PSG was able to toy with the Real Madrid squad during the first half, we don’t want to imagine how disastrous the result would’ve been with the three absentees on the pitch.

Angel Di Maria got a second goal from the outskirts of the box, his shot was clinical and out of Courtois’ reach.

A couple of minutes after PSG’s second goal, Real Marid got a goal disallowed after VAR confirmed that Bale touched the ball with his hand.

Los Blancos were truly suffering this evening at Parc des Princes.

Meunier seals the massacre against Los Blancos.

After the break, Zidane tried to motivate the players to go after at least one goal.

Karim Benzema missed a number of opportunities that could’ve changed the outcome of the game, the first minutes of the second half were the ideal time for Real Madrid to make a comeback.

After that moment passed, Zidane decided to get James and Hazard off the pitch with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The French manager’s intention was to get those goals in, but Lucas Vazquez and Luka Jovic weren’t able to make a difference.

Not even Vinicius could do much after he came on the pitch to take Gareth Bale’s place.

Luck was simply not on Real Madrid’s side this evening, PSG was only waiting for the ideal moment to kill the game.

This came during the final minutes of the game through Angel Di Maria of all people, the Argentine served the ball to Meunier with no defenders to cover him.

The Belgian full-back combined with Bernat to finish the match with a decisive goal, the one that killed Real Madrid on their Champions League debut this season.

We think that dark times are coming for Los Blancos this season, they need a miracle in order to reverse this situation.
