Bayern Munich right-back Rafinha has revealed that he rejected the chance to reunite with former boss Carlo Ancelotti in Napoli last summer.
Ancelotti joined the Naples based club last summer to replace Maurizio Sarri who left for Chelsea but was keen on signing the Brazilian international.
Rafinha played under Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern between 2016 and 2017, winning two Bundesliga titles in a row before the Italian’s ill-fated exit.
Nonetheless, the 33-year-old who previously played for Genoa revealed a switch to the Serie A was on the cards but finally decided to remain loyal to the Bavarian giants.
“I often heard from Carletto,” he told Ale Oliveira in a quote that was cited on Football Italia.
“We exchanged several messages. I admire and respect Mr Ancelotti very much. He invited me to go to Napoli.
“He called me several times during the holidays and told me, ‘Rafa, are you coming to Naples?’
“But I didn’t feel like it, out of loyalty for Bayern Munich. I’d just signed a new contract with the Germans and it didn’t seem right.
“I had a beautiful year-and-a-half with Ancelotti and I’m very close to him.”
Rafinha has since become a back-up to Joshua Kimmich but filled in for the German in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.
