Mino Raiola the super-agent entrusted with managing the affairs of Matthijs De Ligt, insists his client is developing not struggling.
20-year-old Dutch center-back Matthijs De Ligt swapped Ajax for Juventus in the summer of 2019. There were several suitors but the player and his agent Mino Raiola felt the Juventus deal was the best.
De Ligt went from Ajax captain to Juventus bench warmer overnight. He struggled to adapt to the new demands placed upon him.
But for the serious injury to Giorgio Chiellini, it remains to be seen if and when De Ligt would have got his chance.
It just so happened that the young defender prospered from Chiellini’s misfortune. He has, however, still come in for some fierce criticism for his performances.
Many have suggested a move back to the comfort of Ajax may be the only solution to revive his fading reputation.
Raiola though is not one to let anything negative be said about one of his clients. He has turned the struggling spin into a positive in an attempt to increase De Ligt’s falling stock value.
In an interview with Sport Voetbal Magazine, the Italian has a different outlook on De Ligt’s season so far.
“Matthijs is becoming like the Night’s Watch, you can see him developing before your eyes.”
“I hear that he is struggling at Juventus, but I just see that Matthijs is developing.”
“This is the first time he is at a top foreign club with a different culture.”
“He was only used to the culture at Ajax.”
“Matthijs is like an oil tanker, you can’t expect him to suddenly turn 90 degrees. He goes steadily.”
“But, once he’s on course, he can’t be stopped.”
Not everyone though is as convinced as Raiola.
