The incoming Red Devils interim manager revealed his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and plans at Old Trafford as he prepares to take charge.

Ralf Rangnick has praised Cristiano Ronaldo as an ‘amazing, top professional’ in his first press conference as Manchester United’s interim manager.

The German, who takes over from the departed Michael Carrick, witnessed Ronaldo rewrite the history books from the Old Trafford stands on Thursday by scoring his 800th and 801st career goals against Arsenal.

The brace helped Manchester United seal an important 3-2 win over the Gunners in the Premier League.

Now Rangnick, whose favored style of intense pressing in games has sparked doubts over Ronaldo’s role in the team, insists it is he, not any of the players, that must adapt.

“You always have to adapt to the players you have available, not vice versa,” said Rangnick on Friday morning.

“Seeing Cristiano yesterday, 36 years old, an amazing, top professional. At his age, I’ve never seen a player as physically fit.”

The former RB Leipzig boss, who will meet the squad later on Friday morning for training, also outlined his objectives.

“The major target for me is just to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday and if you look at the total number of goals conceded, it is on average of two a game,” Rangnick said.

“That is just too much. Those are not the kind of games you need every day. In football to me, it’s to minimize the coincidence factor.

“It’s about winning games and, in the end, I’m very ambitious. We want to make the most successful season that is possible. Right now, we have to be realistic. The difference between us and the top three is big. But let’s see.”
