3. Wayne Rooney

For a long time, Wayne Rooney was heralded as the second coming of Sir Bobby Charlton. Manchester United links helped but it was his tenacious ability to hit the back of the net.

However, the Evertonian lost his way and lost his appetite for goals. But he did manage to take the record away from Bobby Charlton to become England’s record goal scorer with 53 strikes.

Without silverware to show for and no major impact at international tournaments, Rooney ranks third in our list.
