French defender Raphael Varane made his 250th appearance for Real Madrid in Saturday’s 1-0 La Liga win against Rayo Vallecano
Los Blancos signed Varane in 2011 from Ligue 2 side RC Lens for a reported €10m deal and he has since developed into one of the world’s best defenders.
In fact, the likes of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone feel that Varane would have been a worthy winner for the 2018 Ballon d’Or.
Before the start of the game at the Santiago Bernabeu, Varane was presented with a commemorative shirt by Real president Florentino Perez.
And the 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes to help Real keep a clean sheet as they struggled past Rayo with a slender win after Karim Benzema’s first-half goal.
“We had chances to kill the game off in the first half but we didn’t take them,” Varane told the club website.
“Then we stuck together very well and worked hard in the second to keep a clean sheet and pick up three big points”.
Now Varane is heading to the United Arab Emirates, where he hopes to win his fourth Club World Cup title this month.
Real will play Kashima Antlers in the semi-finals of the competition this Wednesday.
“We’re really looking forward to the Club World Cup,” said Varane.
“There’s a major trophy up for stake, it was very hard work to get there and we’ll be giving our all to win it”.
