Real Madrid will be sweating over the fitness of Luka Jovic after sustaining an injury during Serbia’s 4-2 defeat to Portugal.
Jovic, who joined Real from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer for €60m, only came on for the final three minutes on Saturday. Therefore, he couldn’t make an impact as Serbia lost to Portugal at home.
But it turns out that’s the least of Jovc’s worries, with the Serbian FA announcing on Sunday the striker is injured.
While the FA didn’t release any details regarding the injury, they did confirm Jovic will miss Tuesday’s clash with Luxembourg. So, he’ll likely return to Spain now so that Real can assess him for themselves.
It’s already the second injury blow the 21-year-old has suffered since arriving at Madrid. The last one came in pre-season, where he picked up a knock during Real’s 7-3 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Despite Jovic shaking it off in time for the new season, however, he’s struggled to make his mark at Los Blancos.
Head coach Zinedine Zidane has continued to favour Karim Benzema as his main centre-forward. And, with the Frenchman scoring twice in three La Liga games, it seems Jovic may have a long wait for starting opportunities.
It recently prompted rumours that Real might send the Serbian off on loan for the remainder of this season.
“[The media] always make me laugh,” said Jovic on those rumours last month.
“[They] will always deal with such stories [about me leaving Real Madrid].”
“I’ve dealt with all these kinds of comments since the beginning of my senior career. I have come to terms with the fact that there can always be those comments. Time will tell what is true.”
In all fairness, though, Zidane hasn’t completely frozen him out and has played him in all three league games. In total, he’s made two cameos and one start in 99 minutes of football in Spain.
However, the main question now is on whether Real can count on Jovic for next Saturday’s La Liga match against Levante.
