Alvaro Recoba has claimed that Lionel Messi is a “best of all time” and is even more entertaining to watch than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi and Ronaldo have been the ruling forces in world football for over a decade now. In their record-breaking careers, they’ve won five Ballon d’Ors and managed feats that were previously unimaginable.
Although the long-held debate as to who is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) between the pair has continued to generate many arguments. Players, coaches, pundits, and fans have all voiced contrasting opinions.
In all fairness, though, picking a winner is no simple task considering their outstanding careers.
Messi, on one hand, has played his entire career at Barcelona and won everything in club football. Among his many honours include a staggering 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.
The Argentine’s scoring numbers are out of this world as well, with 603 goals in 687 games for Barcelona.
However, the one thing that continues to elude Messi is international glory with Argentina. Some even feel that this blip may ultimately spoil his legacy and hamper his prospects of becoming the greatest of all-time.
But Ronaldo has no such worries after leading Portugal to the European Championship in 2016, and the UEFA Nations League title last month.
The Real Madrid legend also boasts hugely impressive statistics with 601 goals in his 803 club career games.
Furthermore, Ronaldo has a record five Champions League titles to his name. He’s also the only player in history to win the English, Spanish and Italian league titles across his career.
While the Juventus superstar’s tally six league crowns pales compared to Messi’s 10. The fact that he won them in three different countries could, arguably, be the more impressive feat.
But Recoba, who fired Inter Milan to two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup during his playing days, reckons Messi is the better player in this era.
“Messi has been at the top for 15 years,” the Uruguayan told Perform.
“People can say that he hasn’t moved from Barcelona. Yes, but his teammates have changed, and he’s still there.
“For me, Messi is the best of all time.”
Recoba added: “When it comes to Cristiano, if they had played in different eras, it would be a different story.
“But since they have played in the same era, it is normal for them to be compared.
“Now, if both are playing at the same time and I have to choose a game, I prefer to watch a Messi match.”
