Arsenal are lacking in squad depth right now and must consider signing new players, says ex-Tottenham star Jamie Redknapp
The Gunners have endured a challenging week following back-to-back defeats to Southampton and Spurs before claiming a welcome 3-1 win against Burnley on Saturday.
But Redknapp believes Arsenal’s current injury problems have exposed their lack of squad depth with the likes of midfielder Granit Xhaka being deployed as a centre-back.
This comes in light of Shkodran Mustafi and Hector Bellerin being sidelined with injuries, while Nacho Monreal was withdrawn with a muscular problem on Saturday.
“It has been a tricky week. I’ve watched both games closely and especially in midweek,” Redknapp told Sky Sports on Twitter before Arsenal’s 3-1 win against Burnley.
“That’s a tough one – to lose a derby game after being on such a good run.
“And they’ve had a tough time in terms of injuries as well.
“The performances weren’t great. At Southampton especially they conceded poor goals – three headed goals
“But when you’re changing the team so much it’s very difficult for the manager.
“And this is where you’re looking to maybe bolster the squad as Arsenal haven’t got the depth that other teams have got.
“That’s where the manager is going to need time.
“Anyone who thought he was going to come in straight away and turn it round, get them to the top four, it is going to take time.
“They need players, they need reinforcements. They’re having to play midfield players in defence.
“They’re always juggling that back three or back four. It makes it very difficult for the players.”
"Arsenal don't have the depth other teams have"
Jamie Redknapp hopes Unai Emery has time to build his own squad at the Emirates.
